So here’s what I’ve been offered so far while trying to sell or trade the Montego.
01 BMW 325ci
93 Cobra if I paid HIM money (no thanks)
96 GT Mustang V8 5 speed (Possibility, but he needs to throw in cash, these go for about 2500-3000)
03 Grand Marquis
67 Galaxie Fast Back Project
93 S10 with a V8 swap
05 V6 Mustang
Notchback Mustang with an unfinished V8 that hysterically has a huge custom headliner for a brand of weed. Which was featured in...a weed shop.
91 Fox body with tied frame and roll bar in it (actually interested in this one).
1982 Mercury Cougar

Depending on the “project” state, I’d go with the galaxie

That puts me in the same boat. The goal here is to get a car I can rallyX, Galaxie is even BIGGER than the Montego

Ok, that might be a problem then. The other cars don’t seem to fit either.

Wanted to say BMW, but e46's don’t have limited slip diffs from factory (with the lone exception being the M3), so it’s probably not worth it from a cost perspective. An aftermarket diff probably costs in the region of 1k or more, which, I assume, you’d not be interested in spending.
What do you mean by “tied frame”, by the way? If that is a weird way of saying it has a roll cage, the foxbody is probably a steal

I actually meant to say roll cage in that line but was distracted, because it does have one of those. Tied frame means either through welding or bargain wise with bolts you connect the front and rear subframes with “add-on” frame rails. It makes the car ridiculously more stiff.

I’d be happy to trade my Mercury Montego to you for $3900 + mod powers....ok I’ll be generous, 3750.

It was hard enough rallying the 3200 pound Mercury Milan. I also don’t remember if the Galaxie was unibody or not, because the Montego is and that’s no good. The fox bodies are easily re-enforced with cheap aftermarket parts so it excuses them on the unibody front.

the 91 and 96 mustangs would do fine. Smaller and easily modifiable. Strut tower braces, frame ties, new rear control arms, a set of tires and you’re driving your Mustang off road.
My problem with the 96 is it’s a 4.6L from the slowest generation of 4.6's and it’s just not a fair trade, they are listed on craigslist at around 1000-1400 below what my car is listed at. If he wants to put cash on the hood I’ll trade today.
My biggest worry in the 91 Fox is that he has a 5.0 over bored up to a 347 and he claims to have a nitrous set up on it. That’s a big bore/stroke to then add nitrous to the mix, I’d be instantly worried about the engine’s internals.

I’ll trade you for my old wheelbarrow
And a slightly used sombrero
And I’ll even throw in a stapler if you insist...

I’m almost disappointed that I haven’t gotten anything like that or my usual joke of “I have a semi-functional toaster to trade”.

Not sure about the US, but here the roll cage has to be welded in for you to be allowed to actually compete somewhere. “Screw-type” (that’s a rough translation from Latvia) roll cages are not really allowed anywhere.
Still, if you can get a caged car, I would say go for it. Unless you want to drive it on the street - bucket seats and racing harnesses would get very annoying very quickly in day to day driving.

Only the frame ties are “bolt on” or screw-type. The roll cage should be welded. They look like this under the car:

Yesterday I was offered a ‘91 S-10 V6 5-speed in trade for the Roadmaster. I was interested until he sent me pics of the other side all smashed to crap.

BAH
That 91 Mustang has a hell of a motor in it. It’s way more motor than I need for rally....347 stroker.
I know for sure if I make a trade for this car I won’t be wanting to upgrade power at all. I may want to swap the carb for something more “off road ready” but I’d have to see what’s on it first. Hard to tell from these little pictures. This is a real possibility this one.

I know, I was mostly being facetious.
Also, I saw your comments below. I think you’re right on with the Fox Body - pretty easy to stiffen up with aftermarket parts. As for the nitrous, it depends on how big the shot is, how well it’s setup, and how often it was used. A well sorted nitrous system is no harder on an engine than a turbo or supercharger. The danger is, with nitrous you can go really lean, really fast, and thats when you really start to break stuff. With a FI setup you get at least some kind of warning, usually.
As for the 96, that should have the non-PI (Power Improvement) top end (intake manifold, cylinder heads, and cams). You should be able to source the PI top end off a 99 and later 4.6L for quite cheap. It will give you a nice bump from 215HP to 260HP.

That’s going to be a massive problem I think.
Makes me want to trade the car, rip out the motor and sell it on a stand and put in a base healthy 5.0. I’d honestly prefer fuel injection for rally. A lot better off road consistency wise.

I think if you go that route, maybe sell the motor while it’s still in the car, so people can see/hear it running, and then stick in a healthy 5.0. I think you’ll get more money for it that way.
If you decide to keep the motor, Holley makes (or made, I’m not exactly up on carbs these days) a truck avenger carb, specifically for trucks that get bounced around offroad. That could be a good option.

Did you figure out the problem and the the Montego running?
I like the fox.
The benefit of the 347 is that since it is bored out they would have been forced to replace the pistons and assuming they planned to run smack when they built the motor and were reasonably intelligent they would have used forged pistons and set the ring gap appropriately that makes running nitrous relatively safe other than fueling issues that cause quick obviious death.
Still get a compression test done before buying obviously.
Check out the welds and wiring to make sure corners weren’t cut

You’d be surprised how many people have told me to just Rally the Montego lol.
He says he got it all built, ran the motor in the garage and hasn’t driven it out of the garage or put any nitrous through it. Assuming I can trust the guy that just means I can rip the nitrous system off the car and sell that to pay for some serious GRIP improvements because a 347 stroker in a Rally Mustang is a TON of power to try and grab mud with. I’d really prefer to swap this set up to fuel injection because it’s so much more controlled in non-consistent off road environments.
I like the 96, but like you said I need the PI top end to get the thing moving plus I still probably need some bracing on the SN95 frame and I would need tires/wheels to get moving off road. So that’s why I’d like some cash with that trade.

Have not figured out the Montego so this would be in it’s current state. I just haven’t had time to work on it.
Here’s the pics I was provided of the Fox:
